I often write about vulnerability. It has grown to be a major theme in my life experience.
Being vulnerable does not mean that I must always feel negative emotion in the midst of it. If I can look at vulnerability as a continuum of experiences containing a wide range of emotional possibilities, then I can feel empowered knowing that I have chosen it - maybe not a particular situation, but as a way of life. When I allow myself to be visible and vulnerable, I am opening myself to the possibility of pain and pleasure. I can feel empowered in my vulnerability because I choose it, in my efforts to connect with other human beings; I allow myself to be seen, heard, and experienced. I share what I have to give with the understanding that it may or may not be well-received. The benefits outweigh the risks. For me, grace smoothes the edges of my personal faults, failures, mistakes, and weaknesses. It allows me to open myself, again and again, to humanity. It prevents me from completely shutting myself off. It enables me to continue the work that I’ve come here to do, even when it's hard. Grace allows me to love me over and over again, and to love others as myself.
